Judge Bans Prayer; Students Pray Anyway
Stop the ACLU has a great post today about a high school graduation that took place in Southern Kentucky.

The senior class at a southern Kentucky high school gave their response Friday night to a federal judge’s order banning prayer at commencement.
About 200 seniors stood during the principal’s opening remarks and began reciting the Lord’s Prayer, prompting a standing ovation from a standing-room only crowd at the Russell County High School gymnasium. The thunderous applause drowned out the last part of the prayer. The revival like atmosphere continued when senior Megan Chapman said in her opening remarks that God had guided her since childhood. Chapman was interrupted repeatedly by the cheering crowd as she urged her classmates to trust in God as they go through life. The challenge made the graduation even better because it unified the senior class, Chapman said. “It made the whole senior class come together as one and I think that’s the best way to go out,” said Chapman, who plans to attend the University of the Cumberlands with her twin sister Megan. The graduation took place about 12 hours after a federal judge blocked the inclusion of prayer as part of Russell County High School’s graduation ceremonies. |
Maybe there is hope after all the Public Government Schools have not completely destroyed another generation. These students stood up for their rights and won handily.

Hope that students will disobey the law? What is it you hope for? Would your view change if you understood that in one small Kentucky town, it was an evangelical Christian kid who sued to stop the Hindu version of the Lord’s prayer?
The First Amendment protects your right to gather on Sundays and pray as a congregation. When you support efforts to chip away at the First Amendment, you endanger your own freedom.

I hope that students and all people understand they are free and have rights that the government should not be allowed to take away from them.
I also think it was wrong if someone tried to stop a Hindu prayer as well. All should be allowed to pray as they see fit.
“When you support efforts to chip away at the First Amendment, you endanger your own freedom.” You are absolutely correct. Each day we allow the government more control into our lives, we lose freedoms.

I can’t agree that this was good. We have a case of a governmental entity — the school — picking the faith for kids, and oppressing any who dare stand up for God instead. Then, when the one oppressed kid gets the courts to agree, the students turn on him, and the school does nothing to protect the Constitution or the kid.
It was shameful. As a Christian I am embarrassed and saddened. The First Amendment took a blow, the Constitution was assaulted, and even Jesus comes out with egg on His face.
There are legal ways for kids to mention their faith at graduation. That neither the kids nor the administration of the school were interested in upholding the law demonstrates their disdain for the commandments of God, too. In the end, that action was blasphemous.
