Univeral Preschool Still In Budget
The Governor met with Democratic Leaders on Wednesday. They told him to trim the budget. Guess what isn’t getting cut. That’s right, Universal Preschool. It is still in the budget. Emphasis mine.

At their first formal meeting with the governor as lawmakers hurtle toward a mid-April adjournment, House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President Emil Jones presented alternative budget plans that would pare back the spending increases Blagojevich wants. For two days this week, Madigan met with individual House Democrats to cobble together a spending priority list. Instead the Senate Democrats want to collect money from more special funds set aside for specific purposes, such as breast cancer research. Republicans were not invited to Wednesday’s meeting with seven scheduled days left in session. “They’re going to hatch a plan for the state of Illinois without having nearly half of those people, who have been elected to represent their constituents, being involved,” said state Rep. Keith Sommer, R-Mackinaw. |
Anyone who lives in a district represented by a Republican has no representation in the State of Illinois in the budget process. Isn’t that called taxation without representation. This country had a major revolt over this very same issue a little over 200 years ago.
This plan will hurt everyone, but most of all the kids. I wrote these question below the first time I wrote about this and thought I should ask them again now:
Here are a few more questions for you to consider if you are still not sure about whether to help stop this plan or not?
How many private preschools will this close down if passed?
How much will our property or income taxes rise to pay for this?
How many more bond and education referendums will be brought to the public?
Why not increase the tax credit for preschoolers if there parents choose a private alternative?
Why not allow the current private preschools to fill the gap instead of forcing more students on our currently inefficient Public School system?
For some great analysis of this issue, please visit the Illinois Poilicy Institute. They have done some great work exposing the disaster this will be to the State of Illinois.
Please contact your legislator. You can look them up here.
