Jesus Headed to the Supreme Court

A New York State school censored a poster made by a kindergarten student (excerpts below) because the student included a drawing of Jesus and a Church with a cross on top. The case has been going up and down the federal courts and will most likely end up in the Supreme Court.

Antonio Peck, who attended Catherine McNamara Elementary School in Baldwinsville, N.Y., as a kindergarten student during the 1999-2000 school year, included an image of Jesus and other religious elements in a poster created in fulfillment of a homework assignment on the environment.

School officials rejected one version of the poster and then obscured a portion of the second version when it was placed on display at an assembly, citing concerns over its “religious” nature.

The second version of the poster depicted a robed, praying figure of Jesus, a church with a cross, people picking up trash for recycling, children holding hands around a globe, clouds, trees, a squirrel and grass.

Cases like this continue to point why many people believe that public schools and courts are hostile to Christianity. I don’t see how this case has even gotten this far except for some judge trying to take God out of all our public lives. Antonio was expressing his beliefs in his poster, not that of the schools (obviously). This was not an endorsement of religion. It is free speech by a 5 year old. The school violated his Constitutional Rights plain and simple.
